  10. ====== 1. A quick description of SlipKnot:  ============================
  11.  
  12. 1. SlipKnot is a graphical World-Wide-Web browser for PC users running
  13.    Windows 3.1+ or a higher level of Windows.
  14.    
  15. 2. It is designed for modem users with ordinary dial-up UNIX shell accounts.
  16.  
  17. 3. It does NOT require SLIP or PPP or TCP/IP services in any form (no TIA
  18.    or remosock, etc. if you are familiar with these products).
  19.  
  20. ====== 2. Computer and UNIX service provider requirements ===============
  21.  
  22. On your computer:
  23.  
  24. 1. Windows 3.1, Windows for Workgroup, Windows NT, running in 386
  25.    Enhanced Mode (SlipKnot cannot be used on 286 processors) or
  26.    Windows 95, or OS/2-Win.
  27.  
  28. 2. At least 4 MB of memory, recommended 8MB.  We have noticed memory
  29.    deficiency errors at 4 MB.
  30.  
  31. 3. At least 2 MB of available hard disk space.  SlipKnot itself takes
  32.    approx. 1.5 MB.  When working, SlipKnot's job will be to download
  33.    documents for you from the Internet, and these may require plenty of
  34.    hard disk space.
  35.  
  36. 4. Mouse or other pointing device required (cannot control SlipKnot via
  37.    only the keyboard).
  38.  
  39. On your service provider's UNIX host:
  40.  
  41. 1. Your UNIX system must have either the program "lynx" (version 2.2
  42.    or later, preferably 2-4-2 or 2.4-FM) or the program "www"
  43.    available.  If in doubt, log in to your host, and try to execute
  44.    either of these programs.  You will then know immediately whether
  45.    they are available.  To find the version of lynx on your UNIX host,
  46.    execute the UNIX command: "lynx -version".
  47.  
  48. 2. Your UNIX host must have a program to send files to you via either the
  49.    Xmodem, Ymodem, Zmodem or Kermit protocol.  The actual name of the
  50.    programs that perform these file transfers changes from system to
  51.    system, but try the commands "sx" (for XModem), "sb" (for YModem),
  52.    "sz" (for Zmodem) or "kermit" (for Kermit).  If these fail, ask your
  53.    system administrator or some other knowledgeable person.  Likewise, you
  54.    will need to know the name of the UNIX program that will receive files
  55.    from your PC using Xmodem, Ymodem, Zmodem or Kermit.
  56.  
  57. 3. Your UNIX system must be able to display individual file sizes using the
  58.    "ls -l filename" command.  If "ls" has been renamed or works differently
  59.    from normal, SlipKnot will fail.
  60.    
  61. ========= 3. Steps to installing it =====================================
  62.  
  63. 1. Assuming that you have unzipped the SlipKnot distribution file into
  64.    a temporary directory (please DO NOT choose the temporary directory
  65.    (often \TMP) that Windows uses for its termporary files), launch
  66.    Windows (Enhanced 386 Mode only), bring up File/Run in the Program
  67.    Manager: C:\temporary-directory\SETUP.  This will install SlipKnot
  68.    and create a new Windows group.
  69.  
  70. 1.1 IMPORTANT: If you receive a message from SETUP indicating that the file
  71.     "DDEML..." is in use, you may safely ignore this message and proceed.
  72.  
  73. 1.2 IMPORTANT: If you receive a message from SETUP that it was unable to
  74.     install the file "THREED.VBX" then you may have two options: 1) ignore
  75.     the message (if it is not fatal), which you will be allowed to do if
  76.     there is a version difference between your existing
  77.     C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\THREE.VBX file and the one that SlipKnot is
  78.     attempting to install; or 2) follow the instructions below carefully...
  79.     
  80.     NOTE: This message is due to a bug in Microsoft's SETUP program. 
  81.     For the sake of the instructions below, we'll assume that the
  82.     directory you specified for SlipKnot is "C:\SLIPKNOT".  In the
  83.     instructions below, substitute the appropriate directory on your own
  84.     system. 
  85.         
  86.         a) Terminate SlipKnot (Pressing OK to the error message will
  87.        probably terminate SlipKnot SETUP anyway). 
  88.     
  89.         b) Using DOS or any other file manager, get into your
  90.        \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. 
  91.     
  92.         c) You should find the file: "THREED.VBX" there.  Rename it to:
  93.        "THREED.BAK" 
  94.     
  95.         d) Get into your SlipKnot directory (say, C:\SLIPKNOT).  Delete all
  96.        the files there. 
  97.     
  98.         e) Now start the SETUP process again. 
  99.         
  100.         f) If it fails again, please contact MicroMind at:

  103. 1.3 If you get a message about being unable to write or load the
  104.     COMMDLG.DLL file: it is safe to ignore this message.
  105.  
  106. 2. Press the ReadMe Icon from the SlipKnot Windows group.  There may be
  107.    last minute information there.
  108.  
  109. 3. Launch SlipKnot.  
  110.  
  111. 4. You will be in SlipKnot Terminal and will have to configure the
  112.    communications options, Terminal fonts (make sure you choose a terminal
  113.    font small enough that the entire Terminal Window fits onto your
  114.    screen and large enough to be comfortable), and Host options.  Bring up
  115.    Windows Help and keep it visible as a guide to the meanings of the
  116.    options (this is important!).
  117.  
  118. 5. Try to connect to your host, to test your login script, if you have
  119.    chosen to use login scripts (rather than manual login).  We suggest
  120.    that you use "manual login" the first time until you are familiar
  121.    with SlipKnot's operations (this setting is in the menu item:
  122.    Setup/Host).
  123.  
  124. 6. If logging onto a Freenet, or a menu-based UNIX system which has a
  125.    special menu item for SlipKnot, be especially sure to read the
  126.    online help concerning Setting up the Host.  And in this case,
  127.    ignore the paragraphs 6a and 6b below (the download file test is
  128.    not as important on freenets).
  129.  
  130. 6a. Once connected, try downloading a small file from your Host as a
  131.     test. The download option is available under the Communications
  132.     menu item.
  133.  
  134. 6b. If your download attempts fail (with a message like: "Unable to write
  135.     to your Host"), the problem may be that your shell has the "noclobber"
  136.     option set.  Check SlipKnot Help concerning this problem.
  137.     
  138. 7. If downloading works, press the World Wide Web button, while at your
  139.    UNIX prompt.  This will launch a one-time process to deposit a couple of
  140.    short shell scripts onto your host.  This occasionally fails.  If it
  141.    does fail, try again, or use the Initialize Host menu item under
  142.    Setup.  If it fails repeatedly, send us email (address at end) and
  143.    we will try to debug this.  On the other hand, if it succeeds, you
  144.    will not have to go through this again (at least until you upgrade).

  146. 8. You are now in SlipKnot's Web renderer, with SlipKnot's Home Page
  147.    visible.
  148.  
  149. 9. Explore Configure options; check out the SlipKnot What's New Page, etc.
  150.  
  151. 10. Remember that retrieving documents from the Internet can be tricky for
  152.     many reasons, not the least of which is that there is heavy traffic out
  153.     there that can cause any retrieval to fail (SlipKnot normally retries
  154.     in case of failure).

  175. will be available to you when you have uncompressed it (this will
  176. be done automatically when you run the SETUP program). It is in the 
  177. file: SNTFAQ1.TXT in your SlipKnot directory. If you have not been
  178. able to run the SETUP program, you can expand the FAQ file manually:
  179. find the SNTFAQ1.TX_ file and run the DOS program:

  197. SlipKnot was created because, at that time, there was no other alternative
  198. to accessing the World Wide Web graphically if you did not have SLIP or PPP
  199. or TCP/IP access.  Having analyzed Mosaic and some of its competitors, I
  200. concluded that all of these browsers were designed for people with very
  201. rapid communications channels into the Internet, not modem users.  Even if
  202. you have SLIP access, most of these browsers do not allow you to save
  203. entire documents (with the included pictures),  forcing you to retrieve the
  204. documents again whenever you wish to take a full look at them.  It takes a
  205. while to retrieve any document by modem with any browser, and you shouldn't
  206. have to do this more than once.
  207.  
  208. The Wold Wide Web is a truly wonderful human construct to explore.  I hope
  209. that SlipKnot will make the Web accessible for the first time to a very
  210. large number of people, who will take as much delight in it as I have.
